Well, the major loss is horses I guess, which is both good and bad IMO. In Sims 3 the horses were lovely and I really enjoyed when my Sim got one. On the other hand, EA in their typical overboard fashion included roving herds of wild horses that trampled my flowers and ate my garden produce. It was ridiculous...it's like EA this isn't Chincoteague Island. Also, Sims 4 has such limited lot sizes that it's difficult to imagine where your Sim could even keep a horse comfortably, let alone ride it. The birds, again, had some issues in Sims 3. They functioned like a virus that would bug the Sim. My Sim "tamed" a wild bird and from that point on would do nothing but interact with the bird. I attempted to direct the Sim to "free" the bird, but she wouldn't. Instead, she would pretend to let it go but stick it in her inventory instead. The next time I looked at her, sure enough, she wasn't doing what I told her to do because she was playing with the damn bird. It was really sort of annoying.

It's still better than not having anything? And maybe other pets will be added down the road?

I will be creating a crazy cat lady cos I love cats! I'm not really a dog lover but I still think dogs are cute but I'd prefer cats!

Yes...having pets is fun, but I have been experiencing some drawback on that part. 1: You cannot control pets, which is fine with me, because you can't do so in real life either. But you can't even see their needs. (At least I can't.) I only see their little icon and background color, which helps me somewhat to determine what need of theirs I should fulfill. 2: Taking a puppy outside to do their 'business' is realistic to a point, but in reality, you can train your dog to use a litter box for cats. Why not having that option here too? o.O 3: Camera controls...You can't move it up or down, vertically, only left or right in a horizontal manner. In Sims 2, you could do that easily by clicking the arrow button. 4: Zooming only gets you so far. I think it's as random as it gets, cause sometimes you can zoom nicely and sometimes you can't...like..if your sim lives in the apartment and you take a puppy outside; you have to carefully move your camera to see what your sim and puppy are doing. If you are not careful, camera moves upward like you've been pressing "page up" button, so that little aspect is generally...screwed. In previous games (Sims 2 actually); I haven't noticed that problem. Sims 3 disappointed me. 5: Pets in Sims 4 are amazingly well done. Realistic and so many customization that makes your head spin. So many options and it made me happy to have a puppy and a kitten at the same time.
The thing EA hasn't fixed is...money earning system. Daily pay is bad, and you can't earn enough to support yourself, not without cheats. When you pay 1200 simoleons for rent and bills, you're lucky if you have 100 simoleons left to spare, otherwise, you're in a really bad spot, since your earning is around 180 simoleons. And you need to pay for food that you cook (all the time), you have to pay for pet food, furniture, clothes and it comes down to a fact...that without cheats...it's going to be a long day/week/month...if you follow.
