Hi everyone, I was wondering why we need .dds files for recolors if we can just save them as .png since that seem to work just as well in game. What will happen if I only use png instead of dds?

nothing will happen. sometimes for certain objects png works better and for some dds works better. it's preference really.

I think the use of which format you prefer depends on you. Am sure each has its own advantage. You can read this thread Here and Here to know more.

Game requires .dds images so whenever you import .png in S4S it converts an image to .dds. Studio and 2D software/DDS plugin use different method of compression, therefore quality of texture may vary, sometimes Studio's compression method is better than DDS plugin, and sometimes DDS plugin gives better texture. I recommend having all of the swatches in .png, and if some of them get dark pixels then resave them as .dds and import in Studio. I use .png most of the time and only save in .dds when I see dark artifacts on light colors.
