Hello So I need some help and I hope this is where this goes. Im using gimp to try to make lipstick(as I dont have photoshop or any means to get it or another paid thing) however I think by resizing its losing a bit of its detail... This is the one made in gimp This is one I tryed in paint.net. It seems more pixely but to me seems to still have more detail then the gimp one... This is the original I used. Yes I know it wont be the same. Things lose detail when they are shrunk, but the ones in tuts Ive seen still seem to have far more detail then mine..is it because they use photoshop? If it is then I guess Im stuck..cause I cant get any of those paid things...and yes I know paid things will probably be better but like..I can only work with what I got and what I got/can get is not bought things :/ Id just like some help/answers thanks.

It all depends on compression method of programs that you use if you save files in .dds. Resizing and compressing to .dds does loose a lot of details and it's unavoidable since textures for the lips are super small in TS4 and game requires textures to be in .dds format which is used in the games to reduce the stress on GPU. You won't be able to create a lipstick the same quality as in your picture. The only thing you can try is to increase sharpness or/and contrast. And no, you don't need to get a photoshop for editing.

Ah I havent been using DDS Ive been saving as png. Does that make a difference? Ill have to find the sharpness/contrast thing in gimp then and fiddle with it. I just find it incredibly odd how some videos I watched the detail was kept a lot better on the lips then mine.
I also have another question. Ive had to trim down the edges on the bottom because when on the sim it eased onto the sims chin(can be maybe seen in the paint.net image as I didnt erase for that one) but in the tuts I watched the people didnt do this and it was fine...Maybe they shrunk theres down further but like..any further and its smaller then the default I used .-. So I am confused..(this is like..the first thing Ive ever done CC wise on any sims game so I know basically nothing... :-S)

It can make some difference. Sometimes saving in .dds works better than saving in .png and vice verca. Read my post here where I explained why it can happen. But still when you size an image that much you can't expect that it will have the same amount of details as a big one. Especially considering that your big picture doesn't have super defined creases to start with. The only way how people may achieve better results is by increasing diffuse to 2048x4096 pixels and specular to 1024x2048 and using HQ settings in the game to make previews. But then you need to have all CC to be compatible with HQ settings, and no one plays the game with HQ settings on because it's very difficult for GPU. So some creators make HQ textures, take picture for previews and if you don't have HQ settings on then you'll see a less defined lipstick. For your second question I don't understand what you mean.

Thanks. I’ll read it when I get time. And I know it will lose detail when shrink. First thing I ever learned about digital art. I was just confused why on the tutorials I watched it kept *all* there details (or seemed to to me.) granted they might have had better detail on theirs then mine.
As for my second question..well..I mean like..the lipstick goes over the lips boundary’s onto the sims chin which it’s not supposed to do. I don’t have access to my computer right now or I’d show what I mean. I had to trim bits of the bottom lip off to attempt to get it to line up with the sims lips(as well as trim the corners but I figured I’d be doing that cause the image is slightly smiling while sims do not) the only example I can really give right now is to compare my gimp made lip to me paint.net lip and see how the paint.net one goes over the sims lip onto their chin(it’s not the best angle to see it but if you compare them it should be noticeable) when I get home later today I can show a better example if needed however if I haven’t explaned right.

Sorry, I didn't get that. Leaving this question to someone else. I mean I get that there is some problem but I don't understand your question because I don't see a question.

Oooh. The question was why is it doing that cause I’m making it the size of the base lipstick but it’s not fitting right and I don’t know why. I mostly just asked cause it bugs me and my trimming is so very shaky that I’m not sure it’s helping matters that much but it’s still better than nothing and if that’s the only thing I can do then that’s the only thing I can do *shrug*
I’m beginning to think I’m overthinking this but I only have tutorials to go off of and they never do this and it seems to line up just fine for them...

It can depend entirely on the original image that you are using as a base. Sometimes some textures will need more editing than others. If clipping the bottom slice of the lip texture off means it fits as it should, then do that. There is no rule that says a lipstick HAS to have certain pixels filled to be "correct". Just because it worked in one tutorial video you have seen does not mean it will always work in exactly the same way every time.
I'd probably stick to using GIMP as well just because the edges between the lipstick and the skin look much smoother and more natural in the comparison pictires you provided above.

Don't forget to play around with seeing if PNG or DDS works better for preserving the details you want as well.
