Introduction
If you want to make a recolor of a custom content item please use this tutorial: How to Recolor a Custom Content Item
This tutorial will show you how to make a selective clone of custom content that will require the original item in the Mods folder in order to function properly in the game. You should use this tutorial if your project is based on another creator's work and you are planning something more than a recolor. This includes edits to the rig, slot, light, object catalog, and object definition resources. This tutorial will result in an item that requires the original creator's .package to be in the Sims 4/Mods folder along with your new .package in order for your new .package to work right.
When you do not need to use this tutorial
1. the item you're planning to work with is an EA item - Studio will automatically make it so your item requires whatever pack the item you're working with came from and no special steps are needed for that.
2. the item you're planning to work with is custom content but you are only planning on making a recolor - Studio's Standalone Recolor feature will create a recolor.package that requires the original item to be in the Sims4/Mods folder with your recolor in order for your recolor to function. No special steps are needed as long as you click the recolor button and not the create 3D mesh button.
What you will need
Sims 4 Studio (Joy) or above
Instructions
1. Click Selective Clone below the Object button
2. Click the Object button

3. Select the custom content item you wish to work with. When the Customize box pops up put a check in every box except for the Footprint box.
4. Click OK.

5. Proceed to work on your project as usual and save the .package. The item will not allow itself to be placed in the game unless the original .package it was cloned from is in the mods folder.
