This tutorial will show you how to use Sims 4 Studio to create a new standalone recolor of an EA object. It will not show you how to use a 2D editor.
This tutorial will NOT show you how to recolor a custom content object. If you have a custom content object that you want to make a standalone recolor of please see this tutorial:
What you will need:
Sims 4 Studio - Version 18.104.22.168 or above
A 2D Editor (Paint.net, Photoshop, GIMP, etc.) - Studio can import images as .png or as .dds. I recommend saving images in the .png format rather than using .dds.
If you choose to use .dds and you're using either Photoshop or GIMP you will also need the .dds plugin available for those 2D editors. If you use .png you will not need any special plugin if you're using any of these 3 editors.
1. Put a dot in the Standalone Recolor radio button.
2. Click the Object button.
3. Select the item you want to recolor by clicking on it.
4. Click the Next button. A box will pop up that allows you to name and save your new .package.
5. Name your item.
6. Give your item a description.
7. Change the price if you wish.
8. Click the Texture tab.
9. When the Texture screen comes up click the Export button to export the texture. Open it in your 2D editor and make your recolor. Make sure your image is sized correctly. The image sizes the game will accept are 64, 128, 256, 512, and 1024. It will accept powers of two larger than this but I do not recommend using those. Your image can be square or rectangular, but each side needs to be one of the numbers listed.
Save your image as a .png or as a .dds. I recommend using .png.
If you're saving it as a .png, make sure the image is solid (no checkerboard texture visible on the image) before importing if the item requires no alpha (the item has no transparent areas and your mesh is mapped directly over textured areas of the image).
If you save it as a .dds and the item does not need transparent areas then save it as a .dds DXT1. If it does need transparency save it as a .dds DXT5 (Interpolated Alpha) If you're using the .dds format be sure there is a check mark in the Generate Mip Maps box.
10. Back in Studio click the Import button and browse to your saved image.
11. Change the swatch thumbnail colors if you wish. You can pick up to 3 different colors for your swatch thumbnail. You can easily select swatch colors by right mouse clicking in the Swatch Thumbnail Colors boxes and using the eyedropper to select colors from your object or the texture image you imported.
12. Click on the next swatch thumbnail to get the next swatch choice. Repeat steps 9-11. Repeat for each swatch you want to recolor.
13. If there are extra swatches you don't want to recolor you can remove them by clicking on them and then clicking the Remove Swatch button.
14. When you're finished recoloring all the swatches you want to recolor click the Save button.
After saving put the .package into your Mods folder and test it in the game.
