Ok, I feel like such an idiot! 
I was writing up a detailed how-to including about a dozen screen shots and I accidentally navigated the browser (must have pressed Alt key while using the keyboard arrow keys!), and lost all my work!
Of course it appears that Proboards doesn't auto save work, but is there a way to periodically save a draft (even outside Proboards) that can be published in a post here?
Edit: I use a free wordpress.com account and a couple helper sites. Please see post below for details.
I am thinking of using Google docs since it does auto save, but I'm not sure about the screen shots portion, since posts need to link to imgur etc.
Maybe there is a local BBcode editor I could use on my local computer that saves changes frequently?
The following is pasted from a web based wysiwyg editor but presents the same risk since it doeasn't auto save.

If you are using IE9+ or any non-IE browser just type :) and it should be converted into as you type.
