Hi, I just have a question on texture. In S4Studios under texture, there is diffuse, shadow, specular, normal, and emission. I have diffuse and normal down but what is shadow, specular, and emission? What are these three for and are they important in every mesh or can I go without using them?

Hi! -The shadow texture adds depth to any piece of clothing as it casts the shadow of said item onto the sim's skin. You can read this tutorial on how to create this texture. -The specular controls shine and sparkles (if your item requires any, if it doesn't then you're not required to do any). STILL, i recommend doing one for your item. Exporting the specular will grant you 2 texture files. One with alpha (to be saved as dxt5 with alpha) and one with don't (dxt1). Remember to always keep the names you're given (.mask). To make your item completely matte, then the one with alpha should be black on their main texture and in alpha. The one without alpha, should have the alpha (black and white layout) of your item. if you DON'T do this texture correctly, then other objects that your sim is wearing might overlap your texture causing parts to be shiny as each object has its own specular. - Emission controls glow, only a handful amount of items have this. Such as the alien outfit, that glows on and off. You do not have to add any emission texture if your object does not glow like this.

inabadromance Whoa! Thanks for replying so quickly. Very interesting, thank you for the details. I have one more question about the specular map since you recommended it. I looked through a few tutorials here, mainly the one by UntraditionalNerd, and it seems their items came with specular maps already because it was a mesh from EA. If I am using my own mesh that I've created, where does the map come from? I saw an option to bake it in Blender but I'm not sure if that is correct.

As any other specular (mostly buy mode) you have to create your own. I usually look for similar speculars that i'm looking for, and then clone the item to see what tone they used, and how it is composed. This isn't done through baking, but solely texture editing.
I suggest having a folder with the 2 specular textures, shadow and bump. So you can quickly grab them and edit them for each of your items.
