Hi! hopefully this is a correct section to post this but i am trying to find out if there is any better/faster way to do retextures and/or recolours for sims 4 hairs specifically..
i am doing a BUNCH of my own recolours for my personal game and because i have created 40 colours i have to sit here and play each colour action in photoshop, save it, delete it, then do it all over again for the next colour...and doing that 40 times for each hair is super time consuming.. idk how some creators with like 70+ colours and ombres etc. do it!
Anyone who knows of any other better ways to make this process less time consuming please help ya girl out!

Not sure if it's doable, but have you tried to batch file the actions?

I assume that most hair creators have special photoshop actions. I think they create dirty blonde texture as a base, and then run actions in photoshop. It colors this swatch in different colors, depends how that action was made. Here is a short tutorial on simscommunity about how color actions are used. You would need either to make your own actions and save them, or find existing actions that suit your taste.

Yeah i do have my own colour actions created in photoshop, but because i have 40 of them, for each hair i want to recolour i have to apply the 1st colour action, save it, undo the action, then play the second action, save it, undo it again, and so on...40 times for the hundreds of hair packages i have in my game. im wondering if theres anything out there maybe a different photoshop action, or a 3rd party program that can make that whole process faster like automating the process for me or something

This is the fastest way, as far as I know.

It's under file > automate menu on the photoshop cc version. I use it with my action that I have set up that cleans, tones and brightens all the images I put in a single file folder.
Basically you can set up a few actions to automatically be applied to as many images as you want. I'm not fantastic with it. It's still a relatively new process to me, but maybe it's something you can research to make it easier? I could see it working with something like making several hairs have one color, but I don't know if it would work as well for making one hair several colors.

I use this to to crop a batch of images in the same place and size, but I think the OP wants to apply different actions to each image. It would need a batch that goes on each action, runs it, and save it. Then repeat. I don't know a faster way than going with each action. You can apply the SAME action to a batch of pics, but I don't think you can apply a batch of ACTIONS to the same pic. I might be wrong though.

That's what I wasn't sure of, Mathcope. Thanks for the clarificaiton. I know you can use an action to perform several things to a picture and then use the batch to apply all of those things to several pictures in a folder... but I wasn't sure if you could do the reverse of taking one picture and copying it several times, applying multiple actions to make different color versions. I've never looked into it because I've never had a real need for a lot of extra colors past the 18 default for adults. It might benefit OP if they could hear from someone who does a lot of recolors or maybe even contact someone who does a lot of recolors and get some opinions from them.

I am new at recoloring cc and not very computer savvy but had almost the exact same question to my computer whiz hubby this morning - I have a palette of 60 colors that I use to recolor Sims 4 cc clothing. I pretty much do exactly what you are - I start with white which is my base color, add a color from the palette, save it and then Ctrl Z back to white and apply the next color, and so and so on through the 60 colors. It seems like there should be a way to automate this so that all you have to do is select the cc that you want to recolor and select the palette that you want to use. He thought maybe a script file. . . does anyone know if that is possible for whatever paint program we may use (I use Corel Paintshop Pro )? My second thought/question was it would be nice if we could do the same with uploading our newly recolored cc back into TS4 studio - you name the files by number and a program could batch upload it back into TS4. Am crazy for thinking there's got to be an easier way than doing each one by hand (maybe I'm spoiled)?

I tried using Photoshop actions, but I didn't find it saved that much time over the trusty "ctrl+shift+s" hotkeys then naming the texture. What I do is create a "texture maker" .psd file for each of my palettes. If I have a palette of 40 colors, I'll have 40 color layers in the .psd. I then change each of the color layers from normal to overlay or hard light (depends on the saturation of the color and tones of the base texture as to which one looks better). Once you have a master texture .psd made, you can add in your grayscale texture as the base. It takes a bit of time to set up the palette .psd to start with, but once you have it set up you just change the base texture for each different item. To start saving my textures, I hide all of the color layers except the first one in the stack then start saving. I think it's a total of 7ish clicks for each texture (click to hide current layer, click to unhide the next layer, ctrl+shift+s, name the texture with a number, enter, enter). It's tedious, but it really only takes a couple of minutes. You'll get into a rhythm, and it goes pretty quickly. Put on a video to listen to in the background or a good song. You'll probably be finished creating your textures before the song is over

Update: So my dear sweet computer whiz hubby make me a program that will change the color of cc items by using Windows Batch File and Image Magick where the png files are recolored and given file names once you have entered the RGB codes for each color in whatever palette you are using. It is not the fastest but it once you start the function, you can go do something else while it goes through the program which definitely save my fingers and brain some work. He has not found a way yet to batch import all the new files into the TS4 studio. If that function doesn't exist, I hope that someday all one would need to do is highlight the files you want to import into TS4 Studio and it will auto-create all of the files with a simply click instead of having to do them one by one. :D

Currently feeling that same struggle recoloring a wallpaper I designed and wondering if theres a way to integrate a file nomenclature API to the app? It wouldn't help the actual recoloring process but cutting out the "add new swatch > diffuse > short/medium/tall > import > repeat" would be a help. For example, the name of a wall file is "Swatch_[#]_[Wall Height]_DiffuseMap", so if the app was programmed to read those file names and sort them accordingly, you could batch upload like 50 files at a time and the system would sort them into place. Is that too complex? I know how to describe these kinds of processes but I don't actually know how to code them.
