Is there a way to stop the game from clearing marriages when their spouse died?

I don't think there's a way to change this. In the real world when someone's spouse dies, they don't get a divorce. They are automatically considered to not be married anymore. Why do you want them to be?

Do you have MC Command? sometimes it can clear out dead sims there's a setting to change or tweak that.
