I want, DESPERATELY, to make the Cottage Living animal sheds work while they're surrounded by objects and walls.
I don't want my sim to have to walk up to it to feed.
I don't want my sim to have to do anything with it to clean. And most egregiously, I don't want my sim to have to have access to the shed *to yell into it to call out an animal*, something they can do from across teh lot but refuse to do if there's something in front of the door.
It is indefensible that the devs thought it would be cool to put animals in one speciifc style of building that doesn't match any existing world in the game, and then made it so they're useless if you try to hide them.
What do I have to do to an interaction to make it something sims just "do" versus something they have to go physically make a show of? Is this something I change on the object, or on the interactions?

Wow, dealing with games is frustrating, isn't it? You should try modding Skyrim, ugh. It's not very mod-friendly and it's the buggiest game in the world. It's as if the developers just rushed through the making of it as fast as possible in order to meet a deadline. Scratch that. It isn't "as if." It actually IS like that. Software-makers have to meet a deadline so they release buggy products and just figure they'll patch as needed. I don't even make mods for Skyrim (other than personal stuff); I just try to get mods to play nice with each other. But, as always in life, it is what is. Anyway, I just answered someone who wanted to change the game's mechanics, and all I can think of in both your and the other person's cases is that you want to look into XML tuning. I do not know how to do this myself. It's not something I've ever been interested in, tbh. I recommend you read through some of MizoreYukii's posts here since she seems to be very knowledgeable. She has some tutorials on her site here that might help. There are also tuning tutorials on this site. And there are tutorials at Mod the Sims. It seems that some of the links are dead ends. If that's the case, right-click the link, select "copy link address," then go to Wayback Machine, past the URL in the box, then choose a year and then a day in one of the months. It'll load the archived copy of the whatever page you want to view. Hope this helps!

If you don't want your sims to move toward an object/animate at it, remove the animation references in the file. Canonical_animation (if present), _constraints (if present) and animation_ref under basic_content, and any animations in the outcome. That should be all you need to do for it.

So if I find those things, use the [-] button to collapse it, select that line, and delete it, that is enough? I just did that on the interactions and am testing now. Here's hoping. I notice the upgrade interactions LOOK like they work like a stereo or TV, so I assume sims stand outside playing with a chip for those and they shouldn't need modifying.
If this works I'm going to be *ecstatic* and I know several builders who will too!!!

Unfortunately I made those changes and it still doesn't seem to work. I still get a general routing error no matter what. I can't imagine I did anything wrong, as those were pretty simple changes...
The interactions I modified were
interactions/sl_animalObjects_LivestockPen_Inside_CleanShed
interactions/sl_animalObjects_LivestockPen_Inside_RefillFeed
interactions/sl_animalObjects_SendHome_LivestockPen
interactions/sl_animalObjects_CallOver_LivestockPen

I edited the same files, these two work with what I said: interactions/sl_animalObjects_SendHome_LivestockPen interactions/sl_animalObjects_CallOver_LivestockPen
These two have cached constraints apparently and need to be renamed. Just add your name or make some other minor adjustment. Don't use : and don't change their tuning ID or instance, just adjust the name. That will break the constraints. (I did: MizoreYukii_sI_AnimalObjects_LivestockPen_Inside_CleanShed) interactions/sl_animalObjects_LivestockPen_Inside_CleanShed interactions/sl_animalObjects_LivestockPen_Inside_RefillFeed
