Hey! So, I would first like to say welcome to the Sims community! Secondly, I think whether or not you'll enjoy the game sans "cc" ( custom content created by other players to add onto the game ) depends on personal preference.
As far as 'alpha' cc this is a general term used to refer to cc that doesn't match the games art style --- again I think whether or not you enjoy it is a personal preference. If you think you'd prefer cc to match the game style, you can look for "maxis match cc", which is basically Alpha cc's counterpart.
The Sims Resource is a place where people upload cc to share with the public, you can search by category and last time I used it a lot of the cc there was alpha ( though that may have changed ). If you're looking for maxis match cc, I'd recommend checking out @maxismatchccworld on tumblr, they have a tonne of content that they share from different creators and themselves!

Kermitsims sorta already answered all this, but I'll add to it. It is personal preference. I think you can get away with playing the game vanilla if you choose to. However, the modding community has gone a long way to adding to, improving and fixing many of the issues that the EA/Maxis team have either ignored or just not had time to figure out. Once you go to the mods though, it will be hard to go back. There are many QoL ones out there by folks that just give the game a bit more personality and flavor. My folder is somewhere below 10G, but there are others who have ALOT more than that. I mainly look for shoes, toddler/children clothing/hairstyles and male clothing/hairstyles (because that is where I feel the game lacks variety)... but I have a good bit of female hair too.
Alpha CC tries it's best to mirror real human stuff and kinda puts me in the mind of the Sims 3 which sort of had that style by default, but not with the updated graphics engine in sims 4. There's 4 types Sims folks. Vanilla (which are extraordinarily rare), Maxis Match (which try to find CC that emulates and matches the current game graphics), Alpha (which tries to emulate realistic looks and someone reminiscent of Sims 3) and Maxis Mix (which takes Alpha and Maxis Match and uses both because they like having both) - Oh and there is a group known as the Berries. They take any type of the above and then change the skin tones and hair to be as bright as a crayola box or pastel rainbows... etc.
Google search sims 4 cc and the type you want and you can find tons of it without having to sign up to any services or anything like that. I usually look at the google images and see if it's something I wnat to look further at. One last suggestion though... try to always go to the person's direct website and download from them...and NEVER download the ones that have adverts (adfly comes to mind) on the clicks. It's a quick way to get your pc messed up. TSR is good and Maxismatchccworld is good places to search as well.
