I know what the "not available" icon looks like, but for this one, the place is just blank with a sims diamond in a circle at the top left corner like all of the other icons. does this mean the same thing as the "unavailable" icon?
EDIT: I just realized it can't be the same as "not available" because most of the custom hairs don't have proper thumbnails, and I know I have all of those meshes.

Hi reitanna, I'm not sure what you mean. Could you post a pic illustrating the question?

I also can't figure out how to change color swatches when I edit a mesh to have more than one color.

Hi reitanna, the first image shows CC hairs with all of their swatch choices indicated as blanks with the plumbob in the upper left corner. This happens because Studio uses your game files thumbnail cache to generate the thumbnail list. EA doesn't generate thumbnails for all swatches a hair has. The game only generates a thumbnail for the first swatch. Since that means there is no thumbnail in the cache for that swatch, Studio puts a blank there instead. If you hover over it you will see the name of the item, but there won't be a picture.
The next two pics show a hair with only the first thumbnail swatch color showing up. This happens because, unlike other CAS items, EA only has a single swatch thumbnail color for hair. For this reason, the game is only going to pick up the first color. We can change Studio's UI so that it doesn't offer the choice of adding more than one color so that it is less confusing. Unfortunately, making the game recognize more than one swatch thumbnail color would not be as easy (and I'm not sure it's possible).

thank you for the explanations. that's a little disappointing since I don't know what the hairs look like just by looking at the name. how would you suggest identifying them in S4S? am I able to open a package file to see an image of the hair with some program?

hi! I can see by looking at the length of the scrolling bar that you've placed a lot of cc on the mods folder from s4s. I suggest only placing the packages you want to recolor. That way, those are the only that will show up.

again, I don't know which is which just by looking at the name. when I see the CC in game, it doesn't tell me the name of the package file

oh! i thought you were asking on s4s, not in game. Usually, when a creator makes cc, they put custom thumbnails to distinguish them. If the creator didn't put them, then you have no way of telling but to keep track of the cc you place on your mods.
You can, on the other hand. Open each package on s4s, and take not of the ones you want to recolor. Then only place those you want to recolor on the mods folder under the s4s directory.

so basically remove all package files from the s4s mods folder that DON'T show thumbnails in s4s?

Hi reitanna, every CC hair will show a real thumbnail. If that hair has a single swatch, it will be represented in Sims 4 Studio by a single entry in the thumbnail list and that entry will have the thumbnail pic. If, on the other hand, that hair has many swatches, then it will be represented in Sims 4 Studio by as many entries as it has swatches. Only one of those entries will have a thumbnail with a picture because the game only generates one thumbnail per hair .package. Because Studio cannot show you a thumbnail that does not exist, it will put blank entries for the other swatches. If you hover over those, you will see the name of the hair. If you hover over nearby thumbnail pictures, you will find one that matches those blanks. If you're trying to establish a correlation between a hair.package and its in-game appearance, one of the easiest ways to do that is to use the My CC feature. This allows you to open the individual .packages by name and see them on the model in the model viewer. You will also be able to see each swatch that .package has on the model.
This is all to say, if you remove each hair .package that has blank thumbnails, you will end up removing all hair .packages except for the ones that have a single swatch. If the hair has more than one swatch, it will have blanks for each swatch past the first.

As om has stated, thumbs will not show up like you want them to be. even if you have 1 package or 100. if you're having issues trying to find the one you want, then just place that single package and not the rest.
