So, I've been having a lot of trouble getting the weight transfer to work between an EA mesh and one that I made from scratch. I've tried using various versions of blender (2.78, 2.75, 2.71...) to no avail. I know that tutorials recommend using 2.70 for certain steps but for some reason my laptop refuses to open it (it "quits unexpectedly" as soon as I try to open it). On a different thread someone suggested having 2.78 installed and just having 2.70 in zip, but I don't understand how that works? I believe I was able to get the uv_1 map to work right using 2.75 (although the default body texture isn't showing up on the shirt...maybe I didn't do that right either?), but I'm stuck now on the weight transfer part like in brujah's tutorial. What am I missing? Is version 2.70 absolutely essential for this process to work? I'm using mac os x sierra. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

it's not essential to have 2.70. but to me, personally, it's a smoother weight transfer. how i do weight transfers, i have to use 2.70 and 2.77. if you can't open 2.70, i suggest you download it as a zip. if you don't know how to do that, go to the blender versions page, and where it says to download for your computer, instead of downloading the .exe version, get one that says .zip. then refer back to brujah's tutorial

How does it help to have it as a zip? Am I still unzipping it/opening the program or does 2.77 somehow know how to reference the zipped version?

ok so for blender, you can only have one version on your computer at a time. with a zip file, after extracting it into a folder, you then have the power to open more than one version, depending on the one you downloaded. blender downloads to a certain place in your computer, and each version you download overrides the other one. if you download it as a zip, it doesn't do that. you just go into the zip folder and open the blender that's in there and voila. i've never had a problem with blender not opening on my computer, so i'm not sure what the solution to the actual problem is.. but this should work

Oh I see. I'm with you now. I have no idea why blender crashes either; it's something I'll probably have to take up with the developers. But the weight transfer step should work in any version of blender? Maybe I've been missing something in the tutorials...

that's not exactly true. from what i understand, s4s works best with 2.70 and uses that one over any other. 2.70 is studio's favorite and just reacts better to it. however, 2.70 doesn't have data transfer, which was added in later versions. specifically 2.77, i think. that's why it's popular to have both 2.70 and 2.78

Got it, ok. I've gotten 2.78 to work just fine for the other steps, but I haven't been able to successfully do the weight transfer with it.

that's what 2.70 is for. to do the actual transfer weights button

That makes sense, ok.
I just redid all the steps in 2.78 just in case I missed something the first time, and all seemed to be going well (the shirt had the weight gradient on it this time) until I loaded it into the game and...it makes the sim disappear. I guess my optimism was false on that try. I'll just have to figure out how to get 2.70 to open. Thanks for your help!
