Pets runaway for no reason and It's honestly preventing me from adopting any in my households because they are so much work and they run away all the time....
Pets should run away if you neglect them... I'm surprised no one has fixed this...

That seems to greatly depends on the traits you animal has. I have two separate Sims families. One has a cat and the other a dog. Neither have had problems with them running away.
I'm not quite sure what keeps the cat from running away... her traits are spoiled, prowler and curious. She'll leave the house a lot to have fun, but she always stays on the map. I sometimes follow her. Usually she just goes out to hunt birds, beat up a squirrel, investigate an object or mess with a fish pile. She has never run away, though.
The dog has the loyal trait, which seems to be the main thing that keeps him from running away - he is an absolute velcro dog. He will try to stick by his owner almost 24/7 and even when I make sure the owner has given him play and affection to the max before going to bed, the dog soon gets lonely as heck and whines all night. Apparently simply being in the same room as his sleeping human isn't good enough for him. -__- I feel so freaking sorry for the dog, but the owner needs to sleep!
