I received an error importing a mesh and posted it in the error thread and received this response: "the problem is that a vertex is referencing a bone you have not included. If you add two new vertex groups, the mesh will import without error. I recommend taking a look at a tutorial about weighting a CAS mesh. If you have further issues with this project, please feel welcome to open a thread about it in the Creator Help section" So here I am posting a new thread. I am familiar with a few weighting tutorials that I follow but I haven't heard of something like this before. I've deleted groups that weren't showing any paint on the model (because I have had some issues from keeping them before) and done the 'Clean' step. I've tried Normalizing as well and still receiving the same error. My other lods have the same 10 groups in them and are loading in s4s. I added two blank vertex groups in like was suggested to me, which did work, but I don't understand why this has worked? I'd like to be able to understand and solve the issue on my own in future. Package and blend here

Hi there,
I am not quite sure why you would want to delete half the vertex groups/bones even if they are not used. I redid the weight transfer from a top to your chain top object and it reimported without problem.
Simply don't delete the empty bones. They are empty... they will not impact your mesh. (unless you mess up the cleaning step for example). If you wanna transfer weights without issues, you can do it from the version 2.70 of blender. You will not need the extra step and it never creates problems. (pretty straight forward)

Previously I have had issues with 'empty' weights causing extreme deforms in CAS which only go away once I delete those empty groups, I'm unsure why. I always do the clean step for all groups in 2.79 but I may just try to use 2.70 exclusively when doing weight transfers to see if that reduces the issues. Thanks for the suggestion. I have one more question for the same project regarding weight painting - I know that draping items are notoriously hard to weight paint, but I have gotten my mesh to a point where I'm happy with how it sits with the arms by the side of the body. But because the weight paint is more smoothed out for the connecting arm areas, when I swing the arm out forward or backward, it clips into the body. I was wondering if there are suggestions from more experienced creators on what I could do to improve this? Would adding an extra bone or two in be an option to solve this? I've tried playing with the weight paint for a long time and there's no combo I can find that doesn't throw the shape out. Anyone know of any easy to follow tutorial regarding adding extra bones? In Blender: In game:

You can have a look at this tut which will give you tips on fixing weight problems. But all in all it comes with practice.

Thanks Zelrish. The manual adjusting I was doing was not working for me and the tutorial was a good refresher. Even just looking at things in wireframe mode instead of solid helped me be more objective! I ended up finding a happy medium with minimisation of the clipping.
