So I have an issue with the lightning of my new mesh. I made a cloud wall lamp as shown in picture 1. The effect I want to create is that the light is only coming from the strings. So the cloud itself doesn't give any light. I tried to follow this tutorial about lighting effects. So in step 6, they told me to go to edit mode with solid shading on and select the part I want the vertex painting on. In my case is that the cloud. So I selected the whole cloud with face select as you can see in picture 2. Then in step 7, they say go to vertex painting mode and click the cube. (Face selection masking for painting). So I did as you can see in picture 3. And as the tutorial said, I should be allowed to paint the cloud dark. But When I left click on my cloud nothing happens. It won't get darker or become black, what it should be as you can see in picture 4. Is there anything I did wrong? Because I thought I did everything that the tutorial says.

hi! selections don't get transferred between modes. the easiest way to do this and avoid other parts to get painted is to separate into two mesh groups and then paint only the strings.
with your selection in edit mode done press P (selection). now select the cloud meshgroup and go into vertex paint. from the bottom down menu select paint / set vertex paint (with black selected).
after you're done you join both meshgroups in object mode. (select both, ctrl + J or join from the sidebar.

Thank you for the response.. I did what you said, but it's still not working. My mesh isn't going to change any colour. :(

Hi Stephanniie, Quick question: Are you using Blender 2.70 or a newer version to paint the vertices? My personal experience with Blender 2.70 is that all I can do with it regarding vertex painting is set all colors - the painting brush doesn't work for me. Which is why I have Blender 2.78 to do just that - painting vertices and not really much else (although the transferring of UV data in it is nice to have as well...). To be very honest, I cannot at this time remember how I got the two installations to play nicely having both installed. I do know that I do not have the S4Studio Blender script installed in 2.78, but it isn't really necessary, as I get the same interface as 2.70 with the script installed whenever I open a mesh from 2.70 in 2.78... Also two more tips that I do not know if you know or have done: 1) It is easier when doing detailed painting like this (I am sure that you would want the lights themselves to be very lit, with the cords slightly darker or even 'spot lit' by the lights) I select the portion that I need to detail and move it up by 1 or 2 units along the Z axis for painting, then move it back to where it should be afterwards. 2) Lights in S4 all work slightly differently, and you will want to be sure that you have cloned one that not only utilizes vertex painting (can be found in Warehouse under the Mesh details), but also behaves the way you want - i.e. on all the time or on only during the nighttime... Hoping that I have helped. Cheers.
