Hi Guys, I'm working on a Nightcrawler Maxis Match retexture. I would like to make it so that only the maxis match files appear in game while still requiring a separate download of the mesh per Nightcrawler's TOS. How would I go about doing this?
Notes: I have successfully made a recolor set that was separated from the original file. It doesn’t contain the mesh, so when the original file is removed my retextured hair doesn’t show.
I’m currently updated on the Mac version of S4S and I’m awaiting Nightcrawlers permission to move any further on the project. In the mean time, I’m mostly doing this for my own experience with the game. I have a suspicion that I’m going to have to edit the original file to hide it from game but I’m really hoping it doesn’t come to that. If at all possible, I want all the edits to be reliant on my file.

For your own game, you can indeed hide the original mesh. Open the mesh in S4S, go to the warehouse tab and delete the following resources: Cas Part, CasPart thumbnail, RLE 2 image, RLES image. This way the original mesh will still provide the mesh data for your recolour to work but won't show up in the game.
This is the only way. And honestly I think it would be extremely disrespectful towards the original creator if the original item was automatically repressed in the game of every person who downloaded your recolour. Also there might be simmers who want to have both versions in their games.

Thank you so much for your response. I didn't think about how this would affect the original creator of the mesh. Your option works great for my own game so I think I'll stick with that and post my project as is once I gain permission. I think Nightcrawler's textures are beautiful and the last thing I'd want to do is insult that. I just like a very particular style in my game and figured poeple looking for Maxis Match would want the same set up. I'm very new to retexturing so I'm not 100% sure on etiquette. I just figured as long as I followed TOS, I'd be alright.
