For the past couple of days I've been dabbling at converting items from The Sims 2 to The Sims 4, namely some objects and wall/floor coverings. I was feeling a bit nostalgic at the prospect of being able to convert a whole bunch of stuff from my once favourite Sims entry!
I've never done anything with meshes before, so that was a new experience and using orangemittens's tutorial on converting objects from TS2 to TS4, I was pretty chuffed that I managed to get it to work, albeit with some issues which I'm looking to troubleshoot.
Firstly, I tried converting some basic mural wallpapers from TS2 Teen Style Stuff. (Ignore the incorrect sizing on the blue right piece). The issue is that they have a noticeable line down the joining pieces. This line is not noticeable when using the same horizontal striped pieces. Upon close inspection, it appears that the wallpaper is offset by perhaps one pixel or so to the right, so that one pixel lost from the right appears on the left, creating the line. Hence why there is a dark blue/pink line visible between some of the mainly white pieces and a white line between the mainly blue and pink pieces, and no line at all at the very top on the all white border. Is this a known issue? I've checked my textures and they are definitely not offset so I don't understand this.
Another issue I created two wallpaper sets, the surfer striped set below (all as recolours of the same wallpaper) and the other surfer wallpaper from Teen Style with the hibiscus border. They were both saved as separate package files, and both had different names. However, whilst all the pieces from the striped set appear, two out 4 of the hibiscus textures appear as swatches in the striped set, and the other 2 do not appear at all. I can't get my head around why this would be. There are only the 8 striped swatches appearing in TS4 Studio in that file, and only the 4 hibiscus swatches in the other file. Has anyone had similar issues and know how to fix this?
Secondly, with some of the objects I've converted, for the most part they worked and function as expected. But they appear to have some shiny or warped sections on the texture which do not show in TS4 Studio. Can anyone explain why? I'm sure I've probably missed something and it's probably something left over from the Sims 4 object I cloned, but I'd appreciate a pointer.
Next, I tried converting the kennel from TS2 Pets using the 4-tile pet bed as a base. It looks pretty in game, and the existing animations would be perfect. However, of course the kennel is slightly raised from the ground. So whilst the pet bed animations would work well with the kennel, they're too low and the dog just sinks into it. I'd also need to find a way to remove the ability to enter from the sides, and only allow entry directly through the door (as they can enter the bed from any direction, they can walk through the walls in this case). For those with animation experience, how feasible do you think it would be to edit the animation so that when the dog hops into the "bed", it hops a little higher, and all animations inside the kennel are positioned higher than they would be on the standard bed? Is this something that is possible to do in The Sims 4? Is this something a beginner could do? If so, do you know of any decent tutorials for this sort of thing?
(Note: I realised after attempting these that conversions for the kennel and parrot paintings already exist. Although the kennel I found was purely decorative, I have seen a clip of one where the animations function with the dog jumping into the kennel and lying down at the right height. So as a learning exercise, I'm still wanting to try and get the kennel animations working and fix the texture issues on the other objects.)
Lastly, for anyone with experience of SimPE from The Sims 2, do you know of a way to export multiple texture files at once, rather than having to go into each individual image file and export them one by one? Would save me some time, but I work out how to do this.
I only made a few conversions and they took me the best part of two days, but I'd be interested in trying to churn out quite a few conversions once I get good at it, so I'd appreciate any tips or advice. Thanks!
I'm using Sims 4 Studio 3.1.2.8 and using GIMP to process/edit any textures.
