I did the same process for recoloring hair, cloths, or objects, and it went the same. Made a package file, did the recolor, and put the file in my mods folder. But, it doesn't work. I feel like there are more steps and I don't know what they are.

You need to clone the file as an override. You can't add swatches to the existing familiar.

To add new, even recolored, familiars you have to venture into modding, which might be too much work if you have never modded before and probably more than you're looking for. But if you are interested you can check out the injector you need and it's documentation here: modthesims.info/d/635032/familiar-additions.htmlOtherwise override is the way to go for easiness!
