When I append my mesh from s4s should there only be one s4_studio_mesh to append or more for shirts? the tutorial I'm following shows 3 but I keep getting only one from every shirt i choose to make a mesh

Hi. Some items are split into multiple meshgroups to tune each of them differently. The shirt in the tutorial you are following is split in three meshgroups probably because of the collar. The collar would clip into necklaces and chockers, so those two meshgroups in the chest area are tuned to exclude necklaces and chockers. If the shirt is split in the upper arm area, it is tuned to exlude armbands.
Anyway, the fact that your shirt is made of one mesgroup means that it does not clip into any accessory
