Splitting turns one vertex into two. Removing doubles turns two vertices into one. You split the mesh, then undone all this work. Also, you need to add bigger margins in your diffuse. This is why you are seeing those white spots

Thank you so much for the help mauvemorn. It seems that there was margins problem. I made the texture smaller and now it seems that the spots gone.
