I only want the gems sparkly. But the skin is shiny, too. It looks like this in photoshop. It's saved as DDS.

There must be two files, spec.dds and spec.mask.dds. Also, if your diffuse is 2048x4096, the specular maps must be 1024x2048. Clone any accessory, export its specular maps, and study them to get a better idea of what they should look like

What's the spec.mask.dds file then, and how do I import it? The only option in S4S is just "import" with Specular selected and you can only select one file?

The spec.mask.dds is for specular layering. It should look just like your current rgb and does not need an alpha channel. The way your current spec.dds looks like is not ideal because it will give you a very flat bright shine, so you should export the specular files from an accessory that shines similarly to what you want, study its spec.dds rgb and alpha channels, and modify them to fit your uvs. Then click on Import and choose the first file, spec.dds, the second file will be imported automatically.

I ended up figuring it out. There's still a shine on the sim's chest I can't figure out the source of, though, and I ran into some problems with layering... (I thought makeup and skin details would work over this, but apparently not, and if I set the construction or whatever to a different number he turns pitch black. I may have to try loading it in as a skintone, assuming those can have speculars).
He did already have a specular on another piece, I'm just making sure I get the shape and everything right before I worry about the shine levels!
