Ah, wait, you are not creating content, you're sculpting sims for renders? You need to have enough geometry to support changes that you're trying to make. Add subsurface modifier for smoother shape editing or enable Dyntopo to sculpt fine details

I tried that didn't help until I added subdivide with subsurface but even then it only helped a little bit. My sculpting tools are still kind of rough.

Before subdividing the mesh, quadrangulate it ( on edit mode select everything and Faces - Tris to quads ) If you're making big changes ( say, changing the width of the waist), it is best to use proportional editing, not sculpting tools. If you're sculpting, for example, abs, use dyntopo. It creates extra vertices only where the brush paints

If its after quadrangulating it, you needed to enable Compare uvs in the settings
