Hello!
I will start by saying I am very new to recoloring objects. After watching a couple video tutorials last night, I clicked my way through the process and managed to get a recolored EA painting in game with a modified environment rating of 10 and custom thumbnail. Yay! The image was slightly less defined but I was happy nonetheless that it worked.
My trouble came when I tried again with a new image and new EA painting. My recolor image was MUCH larger than the space I was filling. So again, I dragged down the sizing and copied it into the texture. However, this time it ended up super blurred and pixelated every time I tried to resize my original image to fit the painting frame.
My assumption is this has to do with the image I chose being so large compared to the square I was replacing, but none of the tutorials I have found discuss how to choose a recolor picture. Ie.if my original image should not exceed a certain file size or dimension or picture resolution, etc. I am sure my question is very novice but any help you can give on how to shrink my image would be appreciated! Thanks!

You need to find an image that's the same size or bigger than the obejct you're recoloring. If the painting size is, say 512x512 pixels, and your image is 200x180 pixels, when you stretch it to make it bigger the image will get blurry, because bitmap image is made up of thousands of pixels that get distorted when scaled up from its original size.
If you're getting your images on google search, just look at the size and try to get a bigger image than need it, then scale it down to fit the painting or whatever else you're recoloring.
Good luck and happy recoloring!

When I drag the corner of my image down to shrink it to match the object, that's when my image is becoming super blurry and pixeled.

What software are you using to make the textures? Can you post an screenshot or the file so I can see what the problem is?

Thanks! Hey there. Is the space used in the diffuse OR the resolution of the diffuse map smaller than the previous painting that you used that worked well for you? I'm thinking it could be something to do with one of those things. Also, did the image look very blurry in your photo editing software when you resized it? Sometimes, it can be better to look for pictures that look good at a resolution that is similar to what you need. If an image is too detailed and sized down a lot, it can just end up looking blurry and you end up having to play with sharpening tools for it to look right at the new resolution. You can use these image searching tools in google to search for either an exact pixel amount or a rough size ('larger than' will probably yield too many results). Obviously you can also search for something more creative than me :P. P.S. Great job on completing your cc!!

Hello, Thank you for replying!
My image details: I was recoloring "Still Life with Apple and Pitcher and Books" using PhotoShop Elements My image for recoloring was a jpeg, 1080x1350 pixels, 72 dpi, 126 kb
I can't seem to attach my photos to this posting, but what you described is what I was experiencing. My image looked good at full size but was too large for the picture frame area I cut out on the painting texture. Once I resized my image smaller to match the frame, it became very blurry and pixelated.
Thanks for the tip on searching for similarly sized images. I was hoping to upload very specific artworks so that could be tricky to find the right sizes.
Any tips for how to determine what size images I should be looking for to recolor my textures? In PhotoShop Elements I think you can view the size of your selection rectangles but I'm not sure I'm using that correctly. Haha.
Thank you!

Okay, the size seems pretty good. Maybe you accidentally changed the size of texture before importing to S4S? Can you send me the .package file and I can have a look. You need to upload to dropbox/googledrive/simfileshare or the file sharing of your preference and send me the download link.
I'll be around here for the next couple of hours, but my internet is a bit shaky since is raining a lot in my corner of the woods.

I looked over first on S4S and after loaded ingame and the image does not seems blurred when the frame is placed on its original size. When you scaled up it starts to get blurred the bigger you make the object, but that's because the original size of the texture is only 256x256. Once you scale any object, the texture will be stretched, there's no way around it. It maye be more noticeable in some objects than others, but believe me, is still happeninng. You can try "tricking" the eye by scaling the lady image to fill the entire frame (as if you're doing a close-up), hiding the white areas that in contrast to the colored image ends up accentuating the blurry happening. Hope this helps. Good luck!
edit: you can also use a larger frame since you have a good size source image.

Thank you very much for taking the time to look at it in game. I will try a tighter image or larger frame as you suggested.

I would like to point out that doing a whole image scale is better than one side or one corner at a time. When doing a part of a pic at a time, the pixels become distorted and cause image issues. Doing the whole image at the same time is better. Always check the "insert" size of the painting by selecting it to get an estimated size...then go to google and look for something that is very close to that size. If you use the dogs night, that will cover a pretty good share of images on google that you have been looking at. St Bernard Painting is the same way. words of wisdom: It is better to scale down than up. And if the EA paintings don't ever work out for you and you want to use canvas for some of your images let me know. All you have to do is ask and I will let you use my canvases.
