Older versions are not very laptop/non mouse device friendly. They've done a lot to help with that but mostly in newer builds. Also, although this is more of an opinion, newer versions are more functionally accessible

Hi. Newer versions of Blender do not work on some older computers. The developers decided to focus on functionality instead of updating 6754675 versions of the software everytime a new patch or version of Blender is released. You can work in newer versions and use 2.7 or 2.76 as a bridge to add cut numbers and type (instead of opening the file, append it).
