Make sure the texture follows the size rules. Should follow the power of 2, so square, horizontal or vertical combos of these (1/2/4/8/16/32/64/128/256/512/1024/2048/4096) sizes, examples being 512x512 or 512x1024 or 2048x1024. If the size for instance is 513x1025 you'll get an "error texture" instead of the proper one.

Solved! unsurprisingly sims doesn't like odd resolutions, stretching my texture to 1024x512 fixed it.

Thank you, it seems I was writing my comment up as you posted yours (honest), never thought it would cause colour issues though.
