So I'm currently playing around with S4S. I've found some skins that I like; as well as some other additions that make the skin look better (light gloss etc). But two of these appear to use the same "slot" and if I apply one in CAS; the other is removed. I spent hours Googling to see if there is a mod for TS4 to add additional CAS slots; and apparently that is not possible; so the search brought me to S4S - Warehouse tab. However, this is where my knowledge has stopped and I am now having a stroke as I type this message out. I found out about the "Sort Layer". And I also found a post on here ( sims4studio.com/thread/2310/cas-sort-layer ) which lists all sort layers; so here are my questions: If I ensure the two items sort layers are different; does that allow me to apply them both? Or is their some type of category they are assigned to that I would have to change for one so that they're both not recognized as the same "Type" of item. I guess could I have one be classified as like "freckles" which doesn't take up the slot for the skin. Or maybe have the glossy skin layer over top of the skin, but have it count as a "tattoo". Overall; I guess my other issue is I'm not seeing where an item is given the category or "type" that it should be. A little brief description of how these work and where to go from here would be awesome. Cheers

What you're looking for is the category. You can switch what category an item is in under the Categories section on the Studio page. This tutorial should help.

Nope, those two things are totally unrelated.
Sort layer is for resolving potential texture overlaps. Want to make sure your tucked shirt actually tucks into pants instead of barfing its texture all over the waistband? That's where sort layer comes in. It has nothing to do with CAS slots, and no effect on the fact that you can only ever have one piece of CC per CAS slot on your Sim, period. (That might change someday, but with the current state of the game and our knowledge of it, there are no exceptions.)
What you want is to either a) recategorize one of the two items to a different slot so they no longer conflict with each other, or b) clone at least one of them items and recategorize the clone(s) to different slots for greater overall compatibility with other CC in general.
It is possible to change the category an item appears in from the Warehouse tab, but in most cases there's no good reason to -- it's much easier to do in the Studio tab, under Categories, right at the top above all the checkboxes.
ETA: Beaten to it!

Thanks for the replies!
So let's say I've got a skin, and then a glossy overlay that both cancel each other out when I select them both. Is the best way to resolve this to just clone the item and add it to a new category? Or open one of the two items up, and then select a new category for it? I saw an area where I could define what gender has access to it or if it's for adults, teens, etc. But I don't think I saw anywhere to define it is makeup, eyes, etc.

I'm mildly puzzled about exactly what sort of content you're describing, but I think you're talking about non-default skinblends (i.e. overlays that change the overall face and/or body details of a Sim instead of just small things like a mouth crease or nose shadow)? Or a ND skinblend and some other type of skin detail? If it's two different ND skinblends that are meant to affect the whole face or more, it's also possible that they might not work well together for other reasons, but if adding one literally causes the other to be removed, that's a slot conflict regardless of whether they'll look good together or not.
The reason to CLONE an item would be to make it more flexible, so that you had a copy in each of two or more different categories. It's actually pretty common for creators of stuff that people are likely to want to layer with other things to make multiple versions of the same content, each in a different category (i.e. multiple different skin detail slots, multiple different tattoo slots, etc.) If the item has multiple swatches you'll need to make sure you include them in the clone.
Otherwise, you can just pick a different category (another skin detail slot is best if it's a skin detail) for one of the two items, one that doesn't contain much stuff you'd want to layer with it, and change it.
The reason you never saw the pulldown to change the category is that you're probably only using 'My CC' to view your CC, and you cannot change categories there. You must open the specific item you want to change, usually via clicking the 'My Projects' button and navigating to the file you want to edit. (Unless you've set S4S to open package files on your computer, in which case you can just double-click the file.) You can find pictures of how to do this in the tutorial linked above.
