There's pack sort...and...that's it?
Every object has tags, so why can't you sort by the item's in-game buy mode category? I can't just view all the paintings, i have to know their names ahead of time? That can't be right, what am I missing?

You can do part searches, which kind of does the job of categories. Examples - "Mirror" to get mirrors, "sit" for chairs/loveseats/barstools/etc. or just "barstool" for only barstools, "paint" to get paintings, "sculptwall" for other wallhangings, and so on.
Of you don't know what the category is named, find one item in the rough category you want, and search for one of the words from the hovertext.
You can also find the items you want to use ingame, write down the names, and then search in S4S (but that's tedious). I tend to prefer the first two methods.

I organize things by price. For example, all items from a given creator off of TSR I put at a unique price, and then all of that creator's stuff winds up together. Most creators use round numbers for prices, so I update prices for groups of their things to be 297, 298, 296, etc., avoiding 0's and 5's.
