I've seen people use a black and white color pallet when making skin overlays- ie, wrinkles, nosemasks, eyelids, and so on. I'm assuming this allows them to be universal? (Like, you wouldn't have to make a swatch for ever skin color). Or is this something to do with shadow/normal maps? I'm sorry if this is like, common knowledge- I'm still super new to making CC.

Hi. Skin overlays in color are opaque and function like, say, spray paint, as in they cover the default skin completely. Skin overlays that are black and white add, let's call it, an "effect" on top of the default skin such as pores, wrinkles, freckles, etc. For example, here you can see that the author of the tutorial took an image of an old piece of paper and overlayed it on top of the photo to make it look older. So those overlays work by the same principle, they overlay details on top of the default skin instead of hiding it completely.

I see! Is there a specific setting or like, box I have to tick for the black and white overlay to show up as an overlay and not as a solid decal on the sims's face?
