Hello, Sorry for the maybe stupid question, most of the answers I'm finding are several years old so I just wanted to make sure since I've only worked with Blender 2.9 and the 2.7 interface looks super confusing to me Is it still only Blender 2.7 that works with s4s?

Hi. s4s supports 2.7, 2.76-2.79. On the download page of s4s you can find links to 2.76, which is the recommended version, but if you already have 2.7, then it will do. s4s prompts you to download 2.7 because it is the least demanding version in terms of system requirements.
You can work in unsupported versions and use a supported one as a bridge. - export the blend from s4s, open it in 2.9, File - Save as under a different name; - do what you need to do and save the file; - open the originally exported blend in a supported version, append the meshgroup(s) from the renamed blend from 2.9, assign the cut number(s) and the type, save; - import the last saved blend.

Thank you so much! When I first tried opening the model in 2.7 after having ti through 2.9 it just kept 'crashing' when opening the program. I'm gonna try it this way thank you!

Yeah, 2.8+ is made differently, so 2.7x versions cannot load those scenes
