I just started playing Sims 4 and got the Get Famous expansion pack. I don’t have any other expansion packs or anything and I don’t really have the budget to buy anything else. I’m sorry if these questions get posted a lot. I figured you guys might be the best people to ask.
What is Custom Content? Is it free? How do I get it? I see so many cool hairstyles and makeup looks I want to get, but I don’t know how.
Do you normally pay full price for all the expansion packs? I want so many of them but they’re so expensive.
Besides the “mother lode” cheat, are there any other cheats out there that you would recommend?
What are mods?
Any tips or suggestions on how to make the game fun would be appreciated. I’m so excited to play!
There's usually big sales on sims 4 packs around Black Friday, which takes some of them down by half. I think sometimes there's an after-the-holidays sale and sometimes one in the spring/summer, so it's mostly a matter of keeping an eye out for when they have sales big enough to bring the prices down to a level you're willing to pay. It helps to use reviews of the different packs to prioritize which ones you want to get first. CAS items (clothes/hairs) aren't as big a reason to get a particular pack, you really want to look at what functions it adds to game play. For example, I got the Vintage pack because I wanted to be able to hire butlers.
This is a good source for cheats and how to use them: www.carls-sims-4-guide.com/cheats.php The reset sims cheat is one of the most useful, but there's also cheats to copy outfits which can save time. "freerealestate on" is one of my favorites. You can use it to buy a house without having to pay for it. I tend to use it for households I don't intend to play who I want to have nice houses from the get-go.
Mods and Custom Content (CC) are things you make or download to add to the game that aren't made or supported by Maxis. ModtheSims and TheSimsResource are two good sources, although TheSimsResource can get a little annoying if you don't have an account and have adblocker (still, it's one of the safer ways to download). Practice good internet hygine when looking for stuff. A lot of people use simsfileshare or google drive, which is good, and some have downloads through patreon. But others have sketchier download sites. Keep your anti-virus working and scan what you download before you open it. Most custom content is free and some people take donations. Some simmers have patreons. Depending on the simmer you can either not access it at all, or you get access after their early release period is over. A lot of sims people have tumblrs (simblrs), which can direct you onward to whereever they keep their downloads, just be careful of where you're directed to.
CC tends more to apply to build/buy items and CAS items, and mods tends to apply to things like careers, or changes to how the butlers work, things which rely on script. Game updates can break Mods and CC, which sucks (the 6/14 update just broke a lot of stuff), but if they're still around, modders will often fix what the game update broke. You can find lists of what broke by googling and you may have to remove that mod from the game until it gets fixed. Keep an eye on when a mod was updated. If it's been awhile, check the comments section. If it's broken, a lot of times someone will have reported it there and you can avoid downloading it. Another thing to look out for is if the CC you're downloading is dependent on a pack. If so, it won't work in your game without that pack. Organizing your CC early is important. So is following install directions. If you don't put it in the right place, it won't work (this is especially true for script mods)
If you want particular cc, googling can help point you in the right direction, or there's a subforum on this site that can help you find things. For example, if you want sims Harry Potter stuff, you can google "sims 4 harry potter" and there's whole listicles of Harry Potter content. There's also a lot of good historical content and anime content out there.
