Introduction
I've had several people ask how they can take advantage of a slot mod so that their item can share the slots. The easiest way to do this is by making your item using Studio's Selective Clone feature. This tutorial will show you how to make your item so that in the game it will share the slots of an existing slot mod that overrides EA's original slot set up. Note that in order for the slots to sit correctly on your item the surface of it must be the same size (or larger) and sit at the same height as the original EA item you've cloned. In order for the slots to show up you (and your downloaders) will need the original slot mod.package that adds slots to EA's item in the Sims 4/Mods folder along with your new .package. If they don't have this mod all they will get is EA's original slots.
What you will need
Sims 4 Studio (Joy) or above
Your new mesh that is the same height as EA's original item and has a surface that closely approximates the original
Instructions
1. Open Sims 4 Studio and choose Selective Clone under the Object button.
2. Click the Object button.
3. Select the item you wish to clone. I'm choosing EA's Weathered Dresser because I created a slot mod for it already that adds many new slots to it and this slot mod is in my Sims 4/Mods folder. If there is some other slot mod you wish to use then clone whatever that mod is an override for. It needs to be the exact same item that the slot mod overrides for this to work correctly.
4. Click Next.
5. The Customize Object Clone box will pop up. Put a check mark in all the boxes except for the Rig and Slot boxes. If you want all the swatches the original EA item had put a check mark in the All Swatches box. If you only want the first swatch don't put a check in that box.
6. Click OK to dismiss the pop up box. Name and save your .package as usual.
7. Make your mesh and replace the original meshes as usual. Make any recolors you want. I've narrowed the lower half of EA's dresser mesh and recolored it bright red for this example. Once you're finished save the .package.
Make sure the slot mod you want your item to borrow slots from is in your Mods folder. In the case of this tutorial item I've made sure my Weathered Dresser slot mod is in my Mods folder and then I added my new red dresser.package to the Mods folder with it. In the game, although I didn't add a single slot to this dresser, it has all the slots that my original override dresser has:
If you share your mesh and want your downloaders to be able to use all the extra slots from a slot mod then make sure to link the slot mod download so they can get it. They will need that in their Mods folder to get the extra slots. If they do not get the mod your mesh will still work but it will only have the original slots EA put on the item.
So far I've made default override slot mods for a couple fireplaces, 3 desks, the Roman pedestal, several console tables, all EA's base game fridges, and the base game kitchen cabinets among others. This tutorial will work for any of those items and they are all posted in my Creator Studio HERE. If you've made a slot override and would like to let people know about it so they can use it for their items feel free to link it in the thread below.
