How to fix: "design tool cannot be used" ?

What do you do if the design tool wont pop up at all? As in how do you remove the "design tool cannot be used on this object" message and 'unlock' the ability to use it?



Things I have tried:

• Hitting the "update footprint" button -> S4S crashes - regardless of the checkbox
• Re-cloning the same object using the Create 3D Mesh selection instead of the Standalone Recolor -> footprint button works but then I cannot place the object in the game
