In the linked tutorial, the person is making a normal map in dds, which handles transparency differently
What you've done wrong was not select the mask when pasting the red channel, so it was pasted as a new layer instead of the mask
Also, in both the layer and the mask the background colors are wrong
The first gray square is the
layer thumbnail and its background should be
848484. The second square is the layer
mask thumbnail and its background should be
999999These numbers refer to the exact hex code of the color
Follow this again exactly as written, no need to do anything beyond that
- open your diffuse, crop it with Image - Canvas size to 1024x1024;
- turn it into a normal map with Filter - 3D - Generate normal map;
- copy the green channel, switch to RGB;
- add a new fill layer with
848484;
- Shift Ctrl V to paste the copied channel;
- merge the pasted layer with the fill layer, hide it;
- copy the red channel, switch back to RGB;
- unhide the gray layer, add a mask ( you have already done that), select the mask, Edit - Fill - Color ( choose
999999)
-
with the mask still selected, Shift Ctrl V to paste the copied channel;
- delete the purple mask,
save as png
