That is way way too high in poly count, it has more than most hairs.

To reduce the high-polyness of the object, one would simply create a circle representing the round part of the mesh and simply bake the 12,000 polygon mesh into a texture for the low poly mesh, using Blender's bake function, I managed to do this quickly and easily. Here's a very quick-and-dirty texture bake for the low poly mesh. Here's the before... and here's after. This may seem obvious but the more polys, the more effort your system has to make to render that mesh! So keep your poly counts low as possible. Note that while the mesh has 12,000 less polys, it looks almost exactly the same. Just throwing this tip out there! And the reason why your mesh looks weird in CAS is probably because you haven't vertex painted your mesh correctly, some spots are white, which should not be the case. Hope this helps!
