I've been trying to use photoshop actions to recolor hair, but I'm running into a problem where the actions aren't just affecting the area with pixels, but the whole image. This is not good, since I kind of need parts of the hair texture to be transparent. I tried locking transparency on the layer, but that doesn't fix it. I have one set of actions that doesn't cause this problem, but the colors are wrong and as I'd like to do maxis match I'd prefer not to start from scratch.

Are you using .png? If so you could try Ctrl-clicking on the background layer to select the visible pixels before applying the action.

Use a selection tool to select just the area you want to run the color action over. I imagine, the easiest to use for something like hair would be the magic wand. But if that isn't accurate enough, the polygonal lasso tool might be a good alternative.
