I know how to do that when I use a full pattern. But what If I want to use the top part of an existing wall? Like replacing the 1/3 of that wall with a pattern.

You wouldn't need to do anything different than usual. The sizes that walls need to be made in and the size they need to be resized to is noted in the wall tutorial in the tutorial section. If that doesn't help could you be a little more specific about what the question is?
