It has to be 256x256 px, this way it will always fit on any wall size as the width of a wall always is 256 and the height can be divided into 256.
So let's say you picked a pattern with the size of 200x200px, then you first need to change that size into 256x256px
Also you can test if it's seamless by using the offset filter.
Go to filter > other > offset and for both type in 128 and for undefined areas choose wrap around.
