hi! I would think you have to go into vertex mode and use the subtract brush to erase all the bones that correspond to one leg and click several times on normalize so that when you go into edit mode and click on any vertex the vertex groups (on the side panel, appears by pressing "N") sum a total of 1. Below is a general tutorial for vertex painting. Also, please read my signature. If no one replies to a thread it means that they are either not available at the moment, or maybe they don't know how to help or explain a solution.

I did not understand this: "when you go into edit mode and click on any vertex the vertex groups (on the side panel, appears by pressing" N ") sum total of 1" (I know almost nothing blender)

oh okay! You have to go into edit mode, press N to open the side bar panel. Right click on any vertex to select it and a new tittle panel will appear. It will tell you what bones and the "percentage" of each one are attached to that particular vertex. The sum of all those bones must be equal to 1. If it's lower or more than that, it will mess up the mesh. That's what the "normalize" button is for, so that when you use the brush to subtract a bone, blender can automatically regulate the other bone and make it sum 1.
