Hello, I have been very curious about what adds a sparkle or shiny patch to certain CAS items. In particular I would like to add depth and dimension to an accessory by having the light hit an image and look more 3D. I noticed that some necklaces in CAS have the light hit the surface of the jewel like components differently and would like to try using it for this.

hi! What controls the shine and how light reflects on the item is the Specular. You can access it via the warehouse and is the one that begins with "RLES image". if you've seen an effect similar to what you want, i would clone that EA item, export its specular and see how are the colors and how it's composed. You click "export" name it as you want to .. "Specular" for example and press enter. I usually save it on its own folder inside the project you're working on since it will export you two dds files. Open both in photoshop or the editing program you use. One is specular.dds. That one you have to edit both main and alpha channel and save it as dxt5 with alpha. The other is specular.mask.dds and it's only one main texture, no alpha. Save it as dxt1. To import, click on any of the two and the sister texture will import too. Remember that the resolution of the specular is half the resolution of the main texture. If the original texture of the accessory is 1024x2048 then the specular is 512x1024. You could import the bigger texture, but there's no need to make the package file bigger.

inabadromance I got it to work for accessories, but now I'm curious what controls it with clothing? When looking at the sequin skirt I don't see images that are colored differently so I'm wondering how those effects are added to clothes.

The same image, the .rles, determines shimmer and shine on clothing. If you look at the .rles for the glitter skirt close up (I put an extra gray layer underneath to make it easier to see) you can see the colors that EA is using to get the sequin look it has: If you're interested in playing around with the .rles, SamGump wrote a fun tutorial going over some of the things you can do with it. It's really a great resource.
