Hi stainlesssteel, without the whole error message it's difficult to help you. If the popup doesn't have a full error, please look in your Documents/Sims 4 Studio/Logs folder to find the message that corresponds with the date/time the error occurred.

There are several errors there, most of which look like they are from bad cc, but one in particular may be about the game path. It says that C:\Users\[UserName]\Documents\Sims 4 Studio\Settings.xml is being used by another program. It shouldn't be used by anything but Studio. If you are sure that you don't have any other programs opening that, close Studio and try deleting your Documents\Sims 4 Studio\ folder and start Studio again.

If you open the game path that you entered in Studio's settings in explorer, do you see a file called Default.ini in the Game\Bin folder? [Your Game Path]\Game\Bin\Default.ini

Post by stainlesssteel on Apr 2, 2017 12:58:58 GMT -5
i don't see a file named Default.ini in my game/bin folder
edit: i also have another sims 4 program that can make CAS items (I don't know if i can say the name because this is ts4 studio forum) and it can successfully extract stuff from my ts4 folder

That is the file that Studio is looking for to determine that your game path is valid. It is included with the game installation. If you do not have that, I would suggest using the repair game option in Origin.

I'm glad that you got it working I don't know what the other program uses to detect a valid game installation, but this is just how Studio does it.
