Doing a recolor and can't save w/o the mesh

I've done several recolors, and save with out the mesh in the package, but I'm using Nightcrawler's Pearl hair and for some reason I can't get the mesh separated from the file. I've literally searched for weeks on this, can't find anything so I'm hoping someone here has experience with this! Thanks in advance!
