Specifically, I'd like to add a True Crime category to book writing. I wouldn't even mind replacing Non-Fiction in the game with True Crime. I haven't done much modding and most of it is still way over my head. I was able to follow a tutorial and learn to change the in-game text of an interaction, but when I tried to apply the same tutorial to the computer, I found it wasn't at all the same. I'm just wondering if there is a relatively easy way to rename a genre or create a new one.

So sad no has responded to this post. I know there is a way to do this. It would require a lot of modding. You should probably put all the tuning mods in an empty package (under Tools). You would have to change the tuning for one of the other book genres. You can go to tools on the sims 4 studio. Tools > Extracting Tuning. You will need to pick a genre, search it under tuning, and alter all the coding that come up under that genre to say True Crime. I've never taken on this challenge before but I'm trying to do something in a similar ballpark myself. You should look at the objecting tuning tutorials on here and elsewhere for help. If you're still interested in learning please feel free to contact me so we can learn more together.

Hey I know this is 5 years later lol but I am also looking into this and I want to make a custom book genre to write or edit an existing genre. I have played around with custom TV channels etc but I think this is different since it involves the Sim actively writing to produce the final work. Have you guys found anything that works? <3

Hi. I don't know much at all about XML tuning but I can tell you that EA publishes its tuning descriptions. The most up-to-date one is here and here are instructions for opening the files. Mizoreyukii has some tutorials on her site and you might find helpful information if you search her comments.
