I'm very new to blender/3d modeling. I'm trying to create this top I've drawn on the left, the right is what I have so far. I'm not sure the best way to create the gold details. Just with flat planes? Curves? Or can I just paint the gold on the texture, and somehow make it shine without making the rest of the top shiny? I'm using blender 2.70.

Hi. Yes, you paint it on the texture of the garment just like you painted it on the screenshot of it. The shine can be added only to specific areas, check any specular making tutorial for ts4 CAS items, then find, for example, an outfit with a golden buckle, sample the colors in rgb and alpha, and create your own

I would only use Blender to mesh the overall shape of the top. To add the shiny gold element, I would recommend: A) Add the gold details in the texture file, and add a little bit of "shine" like you already have in your example image. (How the gold tone gets a little lighter and darker over different areas.) B) Edit the specular map to make that section shiny. (Tutorial here)
